NIJ STAFF DEFEAT ND 1 2-0;WINS PGD CUP
By Olaleye Boluwatife
The
Nigerian Institute of Journalism staff has secured a 2-0 victory over the
National Diploma 1 students to win the Post Graduate Diploma Cup on Wednesday,
April 12,
2017.
The
victory came courtesy of a Gbolahan Adetayo's brace in the second half after ND
1 had dominated for much of the game.
ND
1 who had defeated tough teams like ND 2 and host team PGD en route to the
final were highly tipped to come out on top against the staffs.
According
to one of the ND 1 players, Niyi Adewale, some lack of focus and coordination
saw them suffer a painful defeat.
ND
1 started the game on the front foot wowing the spectators with lot of
dribbling moves and creating opportunities to score but never took their
chances.
Even
as the second half started, ND 1 were still having much of the possession but
everything changed when NIJ staffs Striker, Gbolahan fired home from long range
to break the deadlock and give the staffs the lead.
Not
long after though, after ND 1 made some changes to their team, the second goal
followed through the same man, Gbolahan as this time he was left unmarked and
he headed the ball into the open net comfortably. 2-0 in favour of NIJ staff.
Badru
Fihinfoluwa who scored the winning penalty in the semi-final match against PGD
was brought on to inspire a fightback but he couldn't do much against a
highly-spirited and determined staff.
NIJ
Staff goalkeeper made a top class save late on into the game as he jumped high
to parry a long range shot from Niyi Adewale of ND 1 over the bar to still keep
their hopes of a clean sheet intact.
However,
there would be no luck on ND 1's side as the staffs held on to their two goals
lead to be crowned Champions of the PGD Cup 2017.
